Celebrating Black Excellence at MACA! Our JAG students continue to highlight inspiring Black leaders and careers for Black History Month. Submitted by our JAG student Raphael C., we honor Francis Sumner, the first African American psychologist. Known as the "Father of Black Psychology," Sumner became the first Black person to earn a Ph.D. in psychology in 1920. His groundbreaking work challenged racial biases in psychology and helped pave the way for future Black scholars in the field. His legacy continues to inspire those working to advance mental health and social justice. Submitted by our JAG student Nazaire P., we honor Robert Lawrence, the first African American astronaut. A skilled Air Force pilot and Ph.D. holder in physical chemistry, Lawrence was selected for the Manned Orbiting Laboratory program in 1967. Though he tragically passed away before going to space, his legacy paved the way for future Black astronauts like Guion Bluford and Mae Jemison. Often called the “Father of African American Art,” Douglas was a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance. His bold, distinctive style combined modern design with African heritage, creating powerful visuals that told stories of Black culture, history, and identity. 🎶 St. Landry Parish Honor Band Highlights 🎶 The St. Landry Parish Honor Band was held on Saturday, February 1, at the Opelousas Senior High School Auditorium. This special event showcased the top band students from every middle and high school in the parish, with an incredible guest performance by the Lawtell Recorder Group! The event kicked off with a Friday evening rehearsal, leading to an outstanding public performance on Saturday, where each group displayed their talent and hard work. 🎼 Congratulations to our MACA students who represented us with pride: High School: Jalacy P., Kaydie O., Alyssa T., Gabriella H., Savannah T., Bailey R., Ladarrian R., Roman C. Starting today, our JAG students are leading a daily Black History Month campaign, shining a spotlight on inspiring Black careers and honoring the achievements of remarkable people of color. Our first acknowledgment, by our JAG student Lauren B., is Susie King Taylor, the first African American army nurse. She bravely served during the Civil War, providing care to wounded soldiers despite the racial barriers of her time.
